The simplest rule for coffee table size is to match the table to your sofa. Aim for a coffee table that is half to two-thirds the length of the sofa, and two-thirds is the sweet spot: long enough to feel grounded, short enough to leave the sofa breathing room at each end. For an 84 inch sofa that points to a coffee table roughly 42 to 56 inches long. The calculator above works this out for your exact sofa, for rectangular, round, and square tables.
Coffee table size by sofa length
Wondering what size coffee table for an 84 inch sofa, or any other length? These coffee table dimensions follow the half to two-thirds rule, so a 72 inch sofa pairs with a 36 to 48 inch table and a 96 inch sofa with a 48 to 64 inch table.
| Sofa length | Sofa type | Coffee table length |
|---|---|---|
| 60 in | Loveseat | 30 to 40 in |
| 72 in | Apartment sofa | 36 to 48 in |
| 84 in | 3-seat sofa | 42 to 56 in |
| 96 in | Large sofa | 48 to 64 in |
Large coffee tables
A large coffee table works best in front of a long sofa, a sectional, or an open living room where a small table would look lost. Keep it to about two-thirds of the sofa length so it stays in proportion: a 96 inch sofa pairs with a coffee table up to roughly 60 to 64 inches. Big coffee tables also read better with a little more depth, around 24 inches, and a wide 30 inch walkway around the sides. A 60 inch coffee table suits most large three-seat and sectional sofas.
Small round coffee table
A small round coffee table is the easy choice for a compact living room, an apartment, or a sectional with a tight corner. With no sharp corners it slips into a snug walkway and is safer around kids. Look for about 24 to 36 inches across, roughly half the length of a small sofa or loveseat, at the standard 16 to 18 inch height. Switch the shape to Round in the calculator above to size one to your sofa.
Standard coffee table dimensions
If you just want typical numbers to start from, these are the standard coffee table dimensions by shape. A common rectangular coffee table is about 48 inches long, 24 inches deep, and 18 inches tall.
| Shape | Typical L x W x H |
|---|---|
| Rectangular | 48 x 24 x 18 in |
| Round | 36 diameter x 18 in |
| Square | 36 x 36 x 18 in |
How tall should a coffee table be?
A coffee table should sit within 1 to 2 inches of the sofa seat height, so reaching for a drink feels natural rather than a stretch up or down. Most sofa seats land at 16 to 18 inches, which is why standard coffee tables are the same height. If your sofa seat is higher or lower than usual, enter the seat height above and the calculator matches the table height to it.
How much space between a sofa and coffee table?
Leave 14 to 18 inches between the front of the sofa and the coffee table. That is close enough to set down a cup or prop up your feet, with enough room left to walk past and stretch out your legs. Around the other sides of the table, leave about 30 inches where people walk, and at least 18 inches in tight rooms. Enter the open space in front of your sofa in the calculator to check the table and the walkway both fit.
